Chemical peels

Chemical peels

Chemical peels, also called chemexfoliation, derma peeling is an age old (almost 50 years) ,time tested and proven technique of Cosmetology to diminish the signs of ageing. It is also used to treat some of the skin conditions like acne and pigmentation of skin.

Ageing cannot be reversed by any treatment, but the effects of ageing on skin can be reduced or downscaled to rejuvenate the look of the skin like fewer lines and wrinkles, uniform skin color, improved complexion and smooth skin.

Facts to be considered before going for Chemical peels

Chemical peel results are evident only when the procedure is done in a proper scientific way after full assessment of skin type and the condition to be treated. The technique should be used very judiciously and cautiously which can be done only by a professional and qualified Dermato-Cosmetologist.

There are many types of peels. Prior assessment of skin type and condition is must before deciding on the type of peel for getting good results and for reducing the side effects as peeling involves chemicals which sometimes may result in unwanted effects.
Therefore it is important to get the peeling done by a professional rather than a beautician.

It is vital to follow the pre-peel skin care instructions of dermatologist before the procedure which will reduce the potential side effects.

After your preparation is done, dermatologist applies the peel quickly and evenly. We will watch your skin carefully to remove the peel at just the right time. Rarely we do peeling under general anesthesia under surgical settings, if done for a deep and large areas

For medium peel you may need cool compresses followed by a lotion or cream to soothe the skin. For a deep peel, you will have a wound that may require a surgical dressing.

Tips and tricks for good result:

  • Use the moisturizer to keep your skin moist and supple because dry skin results in cracking leading to scars.

  • If your skin burns, itches, or swells after the procedure, please visit us as rubbing or scratching the area can cause an infection which is may become difficult to treat if you neglect.

  • Do not use a tanning bed or other type of indoor tanning otherwise your skin will not heal properly.

  • After your skin heals, apply sunscreen every day to maintain results.

  • Do not apply makeup before your skin heals

After a medium or deep peel, you will have downtime. A deep chemical peel requires rest at home for 2 to 3 weeks.

Results are seen once the skin heals and healing time ranges from 1 day for a refreshing or lunchtime peel to 14 days or longer for a deep peel. To get the ideal results you may need 3 to 5 sittings of chemical peels.

Results are not permanent as it is impossible to stop ageing and so are the effects of ageing on the skin, but peels help in quick fixing the ageing effects.

When done by a professional and qualified Dermato-Cosmetologist, the side effects are minimum as prior assessment will be done thoroughly and scientifically. But in very few cases following side effects may develop:

  • Redness that may last for months.

  • Temporary darkening of the skin.

  • Lighter skin color (medium and deep peels).

  • Scarring (very rare when peel performed by a dermatologist).

Before the treatment you must reveal the following medical history to the Doctor to avoid unwanted side effects

  • If you are on any medicine prescribed for severe acne.
  • All other medicines you take including ,OTC medicines particularly asprin
  • Getting cold sores or has had cold sores in the past.
  • If your skin scars easily.
  • All herbs, vitamins, and minerals you take.
  • All surgeries and cosmetic treatments done on you
  • Dont omit anything even if it seems unimportant.

You should ask the following questions before getting a chemical peel

  • Will a qualified and professional dermatologist perform the chemical peel?
  • What will I need to do before and after the peel to get the optimum results?
  • What results can I expect?
  • What are the potential side effects?
  • Do I have a higher risk for any complications?
  • Will I have downtime?
